Sparrow Hill Home
Nestled into the hillside and surrounded by public land, this home terraces the hill in a series of volumes to capture views of the grassy meadow hillside, nearby forested draw, and commanding valley views.

Sparrow Hill is designed as our clients’ “forever home,” shaped by the natural contours and slope of the site. The main building axis follows hillside contours, with floor levels stepping down in response to the terrain. The primary living level is intentionally set below the existing grade, allowing the home to nestle into the landscape. Surrounded on three sides by public land, the house opens in all directions, with expansive windows framing sweeping views of the valley below.
The design is driven by ambitious sustainability goals and the clients’ deep appreciation for mid-century modern architecture. Every element—from building systems to materials and assemblies—was carefully considered to support performance and design intent. Double-stud exterior walls densely packed with insulation, continuous roof insulation, triple-pane glazing, and exposed concrete floors with radiant heat work together to create a highly efficient thermal envelope, maximizing comfort and energy performance.
The home’s expressed structure, unassuming materials with thoughtful detailing, and simple building forms with large overhangs reflect a utilitarian elegance. This approach not only echoes the spirit of mid-century modern design but also complements the natural surroundings.
