The ‘backpack’
House

A modern addition to a historic worker’s cottage will allow a young family to grow in Missoula’s downtown neighborhood.

With an affinity for contemporary design, a love for the historic worker’s cottage design, and a need to accommodate their growing family, this remodel and addition is designed as a modern counterpoint to the original, ornate home. Located in one of Missoula’s oldest neighborhoods, the 600 square foot addition nearly doubles the size of the home, and a new entry and mudroom stitches together the two-story addition with the single-story cottage. A remodel to the existing kitchen provides a visual connection from the original living room to a new family room that graciously flows to the back yard. Combined with a new bedroom suite on the upper level, modern living conveniences will allow this family to live large in this home affectionately called ‘The Backpack’.
