Backyard Breeze

The Backyard Breeze is a detached Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) in Central Missoula. Working with the developer and contractor throughout the design process, the developer’s needs, and the contractor’s strengths, dovetail in this simple, small home. While less than 600 SF, Backyard Breeze features all the amenities and function of a much-larger home.

A restrained material palette, simple building forms, and a modern twist on traditional building details reflect the owner’s aesthetic and the contractor’s craft. Heat-treated wood siding and painted fiber cement board-on-board siding reflect a contemporary take on Missoula’s traditional building materials. Building material thickness and a recessed patio space create crisp shadow lines and visual interest. Polished concrete floors, wood trim and cabinets, and bright white interiors ensure the Backyard Breeze is cool for all future residents.
