Cottage Community

A three-unit housing developed inspired by historic workers cottages, designed for today.

Inspired by the historic worker cottages found throughout this rural Montana mining town, the Cottage Community infill development is designed to complement traditional cottage scale and details in a contemporary way. With building site area limited by a significant slope, each cottage includes three bedrooms, open living space, and connections to the outdoors in a compact 792 sq. ft. building footprint.

In form, the homes embrace the iconic ‘cottage’ form with a simple gable roof, material changes, and cutaway entries that welcome you with a ‘pop’ of color. Inside, the gable form features vaulted ceilings in living spaces, making the compact spaces feel large. A partial loft area above the main level bedroom provides additional guest sleeping space or an area for retreat in these small homes.
