Cottonwood ADU

Created to provide space for visiting family members and an occasional rental, Cottonwood ADU was built over the top of an existing garage to preserve yard space, foster privacy, and create a dwelling unit with its own sense of place.

Cottonwood ADU is a detached Accessory Dwelling Unit that creates infill housing in Central Missoula. Building on top of the existing garage’s small footprint, a modest building addition for the entry and stair maintains garage function while creating an efficient dwelling unit. A simple, asymmetric gable reduces building massing when viewed from the primary home, and living spaces are pushed toward to the alley to provide separation.
A welcoming entry creates its own identity with a colorful front door and trellis-like awning, while the building forms and siding recall the primary home. A small patio/deck extends interior living spaces and creates visual interest. Tall ceilings and a light color palette make the small spaces feel open, loft-like and spacious. Simple details, clean lines, and window openings that capture views of surrounding hills make this a peaceful retreat for family and friends.
