Sussex Flats

This small-scale infill development combines a bold design with a fresh material palette for maximum design drama

Sussex Flats is a model for modern, sustainable living that addresses Missoula’s housing shortage and rising rents. A dilapidated single-family residence will be replaced with five residential units, parking, and a shared interior green space. Each 2-bedroom unit includes a covered individual porch entry, open living spaces, large windows, and highly efficient mechanical systems and building envelope. Duplex units utilize the same floor plan stacked on top of each other but rotated 90 degrees for design interest.

Located in Central Missoula adjacent to an arterial street, the neighborhood includes mixed multi-family, single family, and low-rise commercial storefronts. Sussex Flats’ simple two-story volumes are a nod to the adjacent single-story commercial storefront building and three-floor apartment building. With easy access to campus, downtown, restaurants, and services, this small-budget project will support low-impact living while living large.
