Loci Architecture + Design
studio
Rooted in adaptive reuse, the project celebrates the building’s historic character while integrating contemporary elements, improved energy performance, and on‑site power generation to demonstrate the impact of thoughtful, resource‑conscious design.

Located at the threshold of Missoula’s downtown core, the renovation of this former worker’s cottage represents Loci Architecture + Design’s commitment to crafting meaningful, sustainable environments. Serving as both Architect and Client, a modest historic structure was transformed into a collaborative workspace that embodies our ethos and design process.
The project is rooted in a rigorous approach to adaptive reuse. Renovation of the existing structure, use of reclaimed materials that would have been sent to the dump, enhanced building envelope performance, reduced energy consumption, and on‑site power generation formed the foundation of the design strategy. Working within a constrained budget, the inherent character of the building was embraced rather than erased. Existing roof structure was carefully exposed and celebrated at the interior, allowing the warmth and patina of the original framing to anchor the space. This historic texture is balanced by a palette of clean, contemporary forms that supports both focused work and creative exchange.
The resulting studio is both a reflection of our values and a demonstration of what thoughtful, resource‑conscious design can achieve. It stands as a small and compelling example of how existing buildings can be reimagined to honor place, support modern practice, and how a project can reduce environmental impact.
